For love of the world…

… is a title stolen from Hannah Arendt, who would have liked to use it  for Vita Activa, to show  that philosophy wasn’t a higher contemplative life, dead to the world.

The love for philosophy  practised by Diotima is love for the world. Our practice of philosophy has been, and is at present, a philosophical practice and at the same time a practice of the world, both moved by a desire which is ours and of the reality of the world. It is the love that makes the world spin, and that we hope will make our heads spin.

It is love for the world that urges one to look for the sense of what we perceive all around us as well as of what remains invisible, a stranger to a superficial sight. It makes us stay close, in our words, to contingency and its grasping sense, which otherwise is subordinated to given interpretations.

Mettere al mondo il mondo (Bringing the world into the world) was the title of a book by Diotima, published many years ago, about women’s realism. We still believe that the work of the philosophical practice we love (called politics of the symbolic) deals with the desire to be in the real movement of the world.

What is real is what we know through the changes caused in us by the exchange we have with it. We feel the power of the real because something happens between us and the others.

We cannot speak about it objectively, as if it were something out there, but we understand what happens because we notice the transformations in the connections we have with it. Remote events as well cause changes in us, although for  reasons we often ignore. There are different kinds of changes which we can all express. As sympathy opens us out so we can listen to other people’s needs and feelings, so attention makes it possible for what is true in what we strive to say, will be listened, pondered, and enriched by personal reflections.

Common among us is a kind of trust in the reality of what we are moved by, a desire that is a mark of what is real and exceeds and cuts reality itself.

Therefore at the beginning of this adventure, for love of the  world, it  was obvious for us to say that we would entrust writing with desire, with all its strength but also with all its uncertainty, together with its ambiguity and its precision. A desire that can be timely, but sometimes untimely, appropriate, but at times totally inappropriate. A desire that sometimes finds the right and proper words, and at times expresses itself in unrefined ways or even stammers, or is uselessly wordy, and silent without words, as we are. A desire that speaks many languages in different styles, that can be captured by brilliant things, but also by tiny, ordinary and opaque things, as our lives are. A desire that comes across other desires, and words which are often at unexpected and never uncertain crossings, as in our relationships. A desire that always moves dissatisfied and dissatisfying, never complete, which pushes and pulls back, which at times even seems to vanish, and then explodes and brightens, as does the love of the world.

Is it possible to make a journal like this? Oh, just as we live.
